Our math, reading, science, and character building programs have accelerated tremendously. While our club makes its mark for its large sports program, our specialized education programs are quickly on the rise. Our Specialized Programs Lead Nathalia, interacts with more than 50 children a day. Our math program called Number Ninjas and our Readers Club, are each divided into two age groups that meet for forty-five minute periods. While our STEAM science program is comprised of 1 group of children ages 9-12.
Khan Academy is a small group oriented program that uses an online learning tool called www.khanacademy.org. We use this program at our club because it allows our club members to practice mathematical skills based upon their grade level, master key concepts, and strengthen math learned in school that they may have challenges with. Khan Academy meets twice weekly where staff and participants track their progress in the program and incentive prizes are given out to students who show they are working hard in the program.
Readers Club is a small group program aimed at assisting Club members in improving in reading skills. The use of reading out loud with staff, fun reading projects, trips to the Haverhill Public Library allow the ability to check out books from the Boys and Girls Club library located in the Learning Center and Homework Room!
In May 2014, thought leaders representing higher education, government, corporations and nonprofits participated in BGCA’s STEM Great Think, the first national discussion to combine innovation and creativity with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming in the out-of-school time environment. The purpose of the STEM Great Think was to develop a plan for securing strategic partnerships to advance STEM education in the out-of-school time space to engage more underrepresented youth in these disciplines and set them on the path to successful careers.
