The Need
Haverhill, Massachusetts, with a population of 66,638, mirrors national trends in struggling with rising rates of substance use, mental health issues, and opioid use disorder. The median household income is $69,237, yet 12% of residents live below the poverty line. Within this context, BGCGH focuses its efforts on two of the city’s highest-risk neighborhoods—Mt. Washington and ACRE—which are home to 70% of the Club’s youth participants.
Of the youth served by BGCGH, 75% come from low-income families, and 40% live in single-parent households. These children are at increased risk of academic underperformance, exposure to crime or drug use, and long-term economic instability.
A study from Boys & Girls Clubs of America finds that Clubs are a sound investment, providing more than $10 in benefits to the community for every dollar invested. Your donation will go a long way to help ensure that we are able to meet the physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs of our members.
