"HAVERHILL — She’s considered a role model to younger members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill and a leader who is making a positive impact on her community. For all she does at the club, Kaitlyn Marin Arteaga was named its Youth of the Year, the club’s highest honor.
A freshman at Haverhill High School where she is a member of the JV volleyball team and JROTC program, Arteaga, 15, was up against two other teen Youth of the Year finalists, April Paea and Justice Deveau. Arteaga was chosen as the winner by three of the club’s board members, Leanne Eastman, Josue Mendez and Scott Pare. “I love working with the little kids in our Homework Hub and art room as they make me laugh,” Arteaga said. “I love helping them out as sometimes they get stuck on their homework. I also love doing paper crafts with them and guide them on craft projects.” Arteaga divides her time between the club’s Keystone teen leadership club and Mentors in Training program, where she continuously has the opportunity to grow as a leader. Last summer she served as a counselor in training at the club’s Camp Tasker in Newton, New Hampshire." To read the full article published by the Eagle Tribune, click here! |
Teen Program
Our teens spend a lot of time having fun, and working hard! From running their very own Keystone club & store, to being involved in sports and volunteering. Each year our teens have multiple award ceremonies and college visits – our local teens are busy learning about leadership, responsibility, and having a sense of community.
- Our teen program is for ages 13-18
- We even have special Summer 'Teen Only' hours in the building from 4:00pm – 8:00pm
- After school hours run until 7:00 pm
Keystone
Keystoning is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s most dynamic teen program. It affords teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience. They conduct activities in three areas: academic success, career exploration and community service. The Taco Bell Foundation for Teens sponsors the Keystone Club program as part of a multi-year teen initiative; a strategic partnership between the Foundation and BGCA provides Clubs with the tools and resources to create a positive place for teens as well as for kids. Youth of the Year
Each year, one exceptional Club member is selected to be the Youth of the Year (YOY), serving as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill youth. Over the decades, these individuals have exemplified the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill mission and are proof to the impact Clubs make in transforming and saving kids’ lives. The local club winners then compete state wide in Massachusetts. The winner of the MA then continues onto the National Youth of the Year. Previous National YOY winners have achieved success in a variety of industries, including entertainment, politics, business and sports.
Becoming National Youth of the Year is an exciting and inspiring journey. Each year, thousands of Club teens participate in local, state and regional Youth of the Year events. Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year Celebration, where one outstanding young person is named Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson. The National Youth of the Year is a role model, leader and advocate for over 3.6 million youth served by Boys & Girls Clubs each year, and all of America’s young people.
